The TNPSC exams mostly follow a written examination followed by an oral test to test a candidate on both analytical and leadership skills. A TNPSC examination is a public service examination hence an official in TNPSC must have the qualities of analytical reasoning and handling of situation skills to solve any problems and work in the post.
Accordingly, the examination pattern is set in the above mentioned forms of written and oral test formats.
The written test is of Objective type and it comprises pattern as:

(i) The minimum qualifying marks in Part A for admission to the Oral Test shall be as follows:
(a) For Scheduled Castes, SC(A)s and Scheduled Tribes : 140
(b) For Most Backward Classes/Denotified and Backward Classes, (OBCM) and BCM Communities : 160
(c) For Others : 180
(c) For Others : 180
The minimum qualifying marks in Part B for a Pass for all shall be 18.
(ii) The question papers on Law – I, II, III and IV in the Written Examination will be set both In Tamil and English and the candidates will be given option of answering the paper either in Tamil or English or partly in Tamil and partly in English.
(iii) The candidates who have not appeared for any of the papers in the Written Examination will not be considered for the selection even if they secure the minimum qualifying marks for selection.
(iv) The syllabus for the post of Assistant Public Prosecutor, Grade II in the Tamil Nadu General Service is made available in the Commission’s website www.tnpsc.gov.in.
